HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Maxx Crosby's season is over, and whether his time with the Las Vegas Raiders is finished remains to be seen.

The Raiders placed their star pass rusher, who has dealt with a knee injury much of the season, on injured reserve on Saturday, meaning he won't play in their final two games.

Las Vegas hosts the New York Giants on Sunday and Kansas City the week after.

"After deliberate and thorough consultation with multiple top medical professionals, it became clear that this decision is in the best interest of both the franchise and the player," the Raiders said in a statement. "Maxx is the ultimate warrior, and he has fought extremely hard to compete each week with his teammates since injuring his knee mid-season.

"We are grateful for his extraordinary contributions. He is a true Raider on and off the field — we look forward to his leadership and toughness into 2026 and beyond."

The move comes a day after the Raiders sidelined Crosby for the game against the Giants. Crosby left the facility after being informed of that decision, which coach Pete Carroll said at the time he supported. Carroll denied there was a rift between Crosby and the organization.

"He's been fighting his (butt) off the whole time," Carroll said Friday. "He's as good a competitor as you can be. You can't battle more than he's battled. He'd do anything to be able to be playing."

The Raiders and Giants each head into their matchup with 2-13 records, and the loser has the inside track to the top overall draft pick. Las Vegas could use the top pick on a quarterback, such as Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, in hopes of addressing a longtime need for an organization that has gone more than two decades without a playoff victory.

In addition to taking Crosby out of the lineup, the club made other moves this week that indicate they are in rebuild mode.

Tight end Brock Bowers (knee) and safety Jeremy Chinn (back) were placed on season-ending injured reserve on Wednesday. Bowers is a two-time Pro Bowler who earned first-team All-Pro honors last season. Chinn has started every game and will finish with 114 tackles, three for loss, and a sack.

As for Crosby, he is one of the league's top pass rushers. He has 10 sacks and a career-high 28 tackles for loss this season. Crosby has recorded double-digit sacks three of the past four seasons.

Crosby made it clear earlier this week that winning was more important than getting the top draft selection.

"I don't give a (expletive) about the pick," Crosby said at the time. "I don't play for that. That's not my job. My job is to be the best defensive end in the world, and that's what I focus on every day and being a great leader and being an influence and on being that guy on a consistent basis for my team. The front office, the coaches, they do that."

Though Crosby has long insisted he wanted to begin and end his career playing for the Raiders, the franchise could take that decision out of his hands by finding a trade partner for a 28-year-old in his prime.

He signed a three-year extension worth $106.5 million, with $91.5 million guaranteed, on March 5 that briefly made Crosby the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. The deal takes Crosby through the 2029 season.

Pittsburgh Steelers star edge rusher T.J. Watt is set to miss his third straight game Sunday vs. Cleveland while recovering from surgery to repair a partially collapsed lung.

However, he's set to return for the team's next meaningful game, according to an NFL Network report.

According to the report, the Steelers expect Watt to be available for their Week 18 game vs. Baltimore if Pittsburgh doesn't clinch the AFC South this weekend. If Pittsburgh (9-6) clinches with either a win Sunday or a Baltimore loss vs. Green Bay Saturday night, Watt's return would come in the Steelers' home playoff game in the wild-card round.

Watt, 31, has missed the last two games after sustaining the partially collapsed lung while undergoing a dry needling treatment that was intended to stimulate muscle recovery. The 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and four-time All-Pro has seven sacks this season, raising his career total to 115 in 134 games. He is 36th on the NFL's all-time sack list and a half-sack ahead of his brother J.J. Watt.

While Watt will be out again, Pittsburgh is set to get a different linebacker, Nick Herbig, back this week against the Browns (3-12) after he missed the last game with a hamstring injury.

With slim NFC West hopes still alive, the visiting Los Angeles Rams return to action after an extended break when they face the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night.

In order to clinch its second straight division title, Los Angeles (11-4) needs to beat Atlanta and the Arizona Cardinals, while the Seattle Seahawks (12-3) and San Francisco 49ers (11-4) must lose at least once each across the final two weeks.

The Rams' odds of earning the NFC's lone postseason bye took a hit last time out, as they squandered a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit in a 38-37 overtime loss to Seattle on Dec. 18.

With everything to play for still in front of the team, Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay is eager to remove the bad taste the Week 16 loss left.

"We did get a chance to get caught up on rest, but at the same time, as a competitor, you're ready to get back at it," McVay said. "I couldn't have been more excited to get back in the building and get around our players and start our preparation."

The Rams lead the NFL with 30.5 points and rank second at 396.7 yards per game, paced by the favorite to win league MVP in quarterback Matthew Stafford. The 37-year-old leads all players with 4,179 passing yards and 40 touchdowns.

The Rams have allowed 36 points per game across the last two outings, leaving McVay's defense with a challenge on Monday night -- mainly that of stopping dynamic Falcons running back Bijan Robinson.

"Oh, he's unbelievable," McVay said of Robinson. "It's a tremendous impact and you have to be aware of him, but they've got great skill everywhere. (Quarterback) Kirk (Cousins) does a great job running the show. They can beat you in a variety of ways. Every time they touch the ball, they're a threat to score."

Atlanta (6-9) was eliminated from postseason contention for the eighth straight year on Dec. 7, but have won consecutive games for just the second time this season. The Falcons host Los Angeles for the first time in six years and head coach Raheem Morris knows they have their hands full with the Rams' high-octane offense.

"These guys are a problem. We know these guys," Morris said. "Start with 'Weapon X' (Stafford). The quarterback, he's a problem. Obviously, Sean McVay calling it for those guys. And then, you know, Puka's (Nacua) a dog in every right. Leads the league -- I don't know what he leads the league in. Probably everything. ... You're talking about one of the best teams, if not the best team in the National Football League."

Nacua's 1,592 receiving yards rank second in the NFL, while teammate Davante Adams' 14 receiving touchdowns lead the league.

In another disappointing campaign, the Falcons can hang their hat on playing well in the national spotlight. Atlanta is playing its fifth prime-time game, winning three of its first four ahead of the final regular-season edition of "Monday Night Football."

"In prime time, we've gone out and found different ways of winning, whether it was Buffalo, whether it was Minnesota, whether it was Thursday night versus Tampa," Morris said. "Those are the type of games you want to be able to put together week in and week out. If we can find ways to be consistent in doing those things, I think that will really help us."

Robinson leads the NFL with 2,026 all-purpose yards while being named to his second straight Pro Bowl. Cousins has thrown for five touchdowns across the Falcons' rare winning streak against the Buccaneers and the Cardinals.

Atlanta cornerback Mike Hughes (ankle) didn't practice all week and was ruled out Saturday. Cornerback Clark Phillips III (triceps/illness) and defensive end Sam Roberts (knee/ankle) also will miss the game.

Wide receiver Drake London (knee) is questionable. He returned to play against the Cardinals after missing four games due to the same injury.

The Rams will be without starting right guard Kevin Dotson (ankle) and cornerback Josh Wallace (ankle). Wide receiver Davante Adams (hamstring) is doubtful after sitting against the Seahawks. Left tackle Alaric Jackson (ankle) and defensive end Braden Fiske (ankle) are questionable.

Penn State football's 2025 season ended on a high note with a win over Clemson in the Pinstripe Bowl.

It's a win for the Nittany Lions that closes a season that got away from them after being a preseason top-three-ranked team. After the game, interim coach Terry Smith got emotional during a postgame interview with ESPN's Taylor McGregor inside Yankee Stadium.

"I love this group. They're just a special group of guys. This is the greatest moment in my life," Smith told McGregor. "It's just a great moment for me, my family. God, I said I wasn't going to do that (cry) again, but I'm just so happy for our guys."

He added: "I love Penn State. I love football. And the game and Penn State have done amazing things for me and my family. I'm just thankful and grateful."

Saturday's win over Clemson closes out Smith's run as interim coach tenure with a 4-3 record since he took over for James Franklin, who was fired on Oct. 12 following an 0-3 start to Big Ten play. Since beginning his stint with an 0-3 record, he led the Nittany Lions to four straight wins, including three wins to end the regular season and become bowl eligible.

In the winding seconds of the Pinstripe Bowl, Penn State fans began chanting Smith's name, a gesture that highlights the job Smith did in his interim stint to salvage a season that once had national championship aspirations. The chants resurfaced during the trophy presentation at Yankee Stadium.

"We dictated the terms of the last four games. I can't be more proud of these guys, these kids. They played their hearts out," Smith said. "What a resilient group. They could have laid down and quit. They didn't have to play. They didn't have to come show up here at the Pinstripe Bowl, but they did.

"They played really, really hard. It's just a testament of Penn State and the character it builds coming to a great university like that."

Smith, a former Penn State wide receiver and a member of Franklin's staff since 2013, interviewed for the full-time coaching position but ultimately was not chosen, as Penn State hired Matt Campbell away from Iowa State. Despite not getting the full-time job, Smith is being retained by Campbell and was rewarded with a new, four-year deal to stay in Happy Valley.

The Nittany Lions' win over Clemson marked their 34th bowl win in program history, which ranks for the fourth most in Division I FBS history.

Canada apologizes for handshake snub after world juniors win vs. Czechia

Hockey Canada issued an apology on Saturday after its players skipped the post-game handshakes following an emotionally charged 7-5 win over Czechia at the IIHF World Junior Championship.

It is customary for teams to shake hands following games at the World Juniors, but Canada skated off the ice on Friday in Minneapolis without doing so after a heated affair that included some pre-game antics, plenty of chirping between players and post-whistle scrums.

"Following last night's game, Canada's National Junior Team skated off the ice before shaking hands with Czechia," Hockey Canada said in a statement. "Hockey Canada takes full responsibility for this oversight and we have apologized to the team, Czech Ice Hockey Association and IIHF for our mistake."

Perennial favorites Canada, who suffered heart-breaking quarter-final losses to Czechia at the World Junior Championship in the last two years, needed to score four times in the third period to secure the victory in their opening game of the tournament.

1 / 11Top photos from 2025 world junior hockey medal gamesTeam USA poses with the IIHF Cup after winning gold in overtime against Finland.

Team Canada captain Porter Martone scored an empty-net goal with one minute remaining to give his team a two-goal lead but then was given a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for skating past the Czechia bench and tapping forward Adam Novotny on the backside.

Players and Canada coach Dale Hunter have pleaded ignorance for failing to participate in the post-game tradition of shaking hands.

"No one was trying to be disrespectful or anything like that," said Canada winger Tij Iginla. "We actually didn't really know we were supposed to shake hands, but now we do and we'll shake them after every game no matter the result."

Hunter said: "You know something, though, I didn't know. But I know now, so there'll be a handshake (after tonight's game against Latvia) and I'll say sorry to the Czechs."

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Brianne Jenner scored in the eighth round of the shootout as the Ottawa Charge defeated the Boston Fleet 3-2 on Saturday in the Professional Women's Hockey League.

Gwyneth Philips made 34 saves in regulation and overtime for Ottawa, and stopped six shooters in the shootout.

Aerin Frankel made 30 saves for Boston but was beat on back-to-back attempts by Jenner in the shootout.

The goaltenders are former teammates at Northeastern and will be counted on to lead the U.S. women's team at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

The Fleet (6-0-1-1) sit atop the standings and came into the game having surrendered just eight goals, while Ottawa (1-3-0-5) sits seventh.

Trailing 2-1, Ottawa took advantage of a turnover in the defensive zone. Fanuza Kadisova drove to the net and slid a puck five-hole that trickled across the goal line with 2:58 remaining regulation, sending the sold-out crowd to their feet.

The Fleet tied the game 1-all midway through the second when Olivia Mobley was able to jump on a Susanna Tapani rebound that was just out of reach from Philips in front.

Boston took a 2-1 lead with 18.6 seconds remaining in the period.

After Philips made a save on a Megan Keller slapshot, Boston regained control and Haley Winn wristed a shot beating Philips glove side.

Despite being outshot 15-8, the Charge held a 1-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes.

Stephanie Markowski picked up her first goal of the season burying a Gabbie Hughes pass off a solid Ottawa rush.

The game marked Ottawa's first at home in 25 days after playing five straight on the road.

Up next

Charge: Ottawa hosts Minnesota Frost next Saturday.

Fleet: Boston hosts the Vancouver Goldeneyes next Saturday.

Chicago Bears defensive end Austin Booker was fined more than $11,000 on Saturday for his hits that sent Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love into concussion protocol.

The NFL fined Booker $11,636 on Saturday for two illegal hits on Love in their 22-16 comeback win over the Packers last weekend. The second hit, a helmet-to-helmet shot, sent Love out of the game.

Booker flew into the backfield and drilled Love directly in the helmet as he brought him down for a sack in the second quarter of that contest at Soldier FIeld. He was immediately penalized for the hit in the game, too.

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) December 27, 2025

Love remained down after the hit, and eventually walked off into the blue medical tent. He didn't return, and was replaced by Malik Willis the rest of the way. Love is still in concussion protocol, and has been ruled out of Saturday night's game against the Baltimore Ravens as a result.

Willis went 9-of-11 for 121 yards with a touchdown in Love's absence against the Bears, though Chicago rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to grab the win in overtime. That extended their lead in the NFC North. They'll win the division if the Ravens beat the Packers on Saturday night, too, which will secure the team's first divisional title since 2018.

The Packers, who will wrap up the season with the Minnesota Vikings next week, can still win the NFC North. They'll have to be perfect the rest of the way, however, and the Bears will have to lose out.

Booker has 29 total tackles and 2.5 sacks so far this season, both of which are career-highs for the 23-year-old. The Bears selected him in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Kansas.

The Bears will take on the San Francisco 49ers next on Sunday night. They'll enter that contest with an 11-4 record and an outside shot at securing the No. 1 seed in the NFC. That's something the franchise hasn't pulled off since 2006. Chicago will then wrap up the regular season against the Detroit Lions next weekend.
