Multiple sources who have spoken to family members told PEOPLE on Dec. 14 that Rob and Michele were killed by their son Nick
Monty Python comedian Eric Idle says he spoke with Rob Reiner just hours before he and his wife Michele were found dead by apparent homicide inside their Brentwood, Calif., home on Sunday, Dec. 14.
Idle, 82, wrote on X early on Monday, Dec. 15, that he and Reiner, who was 78, discussed Reiner's experience filming scenes for Reiner's mockumentary sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, among other things, during their conversation.
"Rob Reiner was a lovely man. I spoke to him last night for over an hour," Idle wrote. "I always enjoyed his company. I met him at his Dad's in 1975. He was telling me about [filming] at Stonehenge and his thoughts for the future. This is so awful."
According to multiple sources who have spoken to family members, the couple were killed by their son Nick, and their bodies were discovered by their daughter Romy. Per Los Angeles Sheriff's Department records, Nick was taken into custody on Dec. 15 and is being held on $4 million bail.
"I shall miss him. A clever, talented and very thoughtful man," Idle added in his post. "So awful."

Idle is best known for his work with the British sketch comedy troupe Monty Python in the 1960s and '70s. In 1978, Idle released a television film titled All You Need Is Cash, a mockumentary-style film that follows the career of a fictional British band called the Rutles, in parody of the Beatles. The movie and the Rutles' two soundtrack albums are considered precursors to Reiner's own 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, a comedy that follows a fictional heavy metal band called Spinal Tap. (Reiner's last movie as a director was Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, a sequel that hit theaters in September.)
The Reiner family announced Rob and Michele's deaths in a statement to Variety on Sunday, Dec. 14 as news of emergency response to the family's home spread. "We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time," the statement read.
Rob and Michele, who was 68, had been married since 1989. They met and fell in love while Rob was working on his 1989 romantic comedy classic When Harry Met Sally, and Rob even changed the movie's ending in part because meeting Michele changed his own attitude toward romance. Aside from Nick and Romy, Rob and Michele also shared son Jake, who works as a producer in Hollywood. Rob also has one daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his first marriage to actress and filmmaker Penny Marshall. (Tracy's biological father is Marshall's late first husband, Michael Henry.)

PEOPLE initially confirmed with the Los Angeles Fire Department that Rob and Michele were found dead at their home. The LAFD was called to the couple's home at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday to provide medical aid, a spokesperson told PEOPLE. News initially broke that two people had been found dead at the director's home, before it was confirmed that he and Michele were the victims.
According to TMZ, they suffered wounds consistent with a knife attack.
