Wendy's announced that 200 to 350 "consistently underperforming" restaurants are set to close across the U.S. by the end of 2025

Wendy's is set to close hundreds of restaurants across the United States.

The fast food restaurant chain's Interim CEO Ken Cook announced on Nov. 7 that a "mid single-digit percentage" of Wendy's U.S. locations, amounting to around 200 to 350 restaurants, are set to close because they are "consistently underperforming" in sales.

"These actions will strengthen the system and enable franchisees to invest more capital and resources in their remaining restaurants," Cook said during the company's quarterly earnings call, per CNN. "Closures of underperforming units are expected to boost sales and profitability at nearby locations."

While the company did not provide a list of the exact locations expected to shut their doors, Cook explained that a number of the chain's restaurants "do not elevate the brand" and are a "drag from a franchisee financial performance perspective."

The Interim CEO previously admitted in an August earnings call, per CNN, that the brand is "not happy with our sales performance."

At the time, the company — which has lost nearly 50% of its stock value this year — announced a "comprehensive strategic plan" called "Project Fresh," to revitalize the brand with refreshed marketing and menu adjustments under the guidance of former Taco Bell CEO Greg Creed.

"Wendy's board of directors and management team are dissatisfied with the current valuation of the company and have been working to put the company on the right path to create value for our franchisees, employees and shareholders," Art Winkleback, chairman of Wendy's board, stated in an October press release.

He added, "Execution is underway and we are confident that Project Fresh will position Wendy's as the industry leader — one that guests love, franchisees are proud to operate, teams are excited to be a part of, and creates significant value for our shareholders."

One food item that has helped Wendy's recently is its newly released chicken tenders, "Tendys."

Cook said of the new staples, "We're looking forward to continuing that momentum, and this is an encouraging first step as we look to reestablish our leadership position in chicken."

The most recent wave of closures comes one year after Wendy's announced it would be closing 140 restaurants that were "outdated and located in underperforming" areas — on top of the 100 closures that the company announced a few months prior.

"They're just in locations that don't build our brands," then-CEO Kirk Tanner said in October 2024, per the . "You look at a brand that's 55 years old and some of those restaurants are quite out of date."
